How Bancontact works with Oliver POS for WooCommerce

Bancontact is Belgium's domestic debit card and account-to-account scheme, used in over 1.5B annual transactions. Oliver POS makes Bancontact available inside the in-POS browser view via Mollie, Stripe, Adyen, or any other Bancontact-capable WooCommerce gateway.

Bancontact, Belgium's Payment Workhorse

Bancontact is the local debit card system run by Belgian banks. There are roughly 16 million Bancontact cards for a population of 11 million, meaning most adult Belgians have one. For online payments, Bancontact also has a mobile app authentication process where the customer scans a QR code with the Bancontact app, authenticates with their PIN, and the bank settles the payment.

Using Bancontact at the Oliver POS register

Bancontact is offered through Mollie, Stripe, Adyen, MultiSafepay, and other European gateways. At the Oliver register, the cashier selects the gateway, and Oliver opens the hosted page in its in-POS browser view. The customer then chooses Bancontact and either enters their card number or scans the QR code with the Bancontact app. Once the bank approves, Oliver creates the WooCommerce order.

Why Belgian retailers need this

Belgian customers often specifically look for Bancontact — using a Visa or Mastercard at the counter is usually the backup option, not the first choice. For a Belgian retailer, not offering Bancontact at the Oliver POS could mean losing sales, just like not offering iDEAL in the Netherlands would.

Best for retailers who…

Enable Bancontact at the Oliver POS for any Belgian retail business. It's a must-have for customers and has the lowest acceptance cost in the Belgian market.
