What does the 'Too many attempts' error mean?

If you see a Too many attempts error on your Oliver POS register, don't panic. This is a built-in security feature designed to protect your WooCommerce store from unauthorized access. Read on to learn exactly what triggers it and how to get back into your register.

What you will see

  • You see a Too many attempts. Try again in [X] seconds. or Pairing is temporarily locked out. message on your register screen.

  • A countdown timer appears showing exactly how many seconds you need to wait.

  • The PIN pad or pairing button is temporarily disabled until the timer finishes.

Why this happens

Oliver POS automatically locks the screen to protect your store's data. This security measure kicks in if:

  • Someone enters the wrong staff PIN 5 times in a row.

  • There are too many failed attempts to pair a new register to your WooCommerce store within a 15-minute window.

How to fix the 'Too many attempts' error

  1. Wait for the timer: Simply wait for the on-screen countdown timer to finish (this can be up to 15 minutes). You cannot bypass this timer.

  2. Try again: Once the timer reaches zero, enter the correct PIN or pairing details.

  3. Reset the counter: A successful login instantly resets the security counter, so you are back to normal.

If a cashier is locked out, they can use a different register in the meantime. The lockout only affects the specific device and internet connection where the failed attempts happened.

Frequently asked questions

As long as you enter the correct PIN before hitting the 5-attempt limit, Oliver POS resets your counter back to zero.
