How MobilePay works with Oliver POS for WooCommerce

MobilePay is the dominant mobile-payment app in Denmark (4M+ users) and Finland (2M+). Now part of Vipps MobilePay, it shares a WooCommerce plugin with Vipps. Oliver POS opens the MobilePay hosted approval inside the in-POS browser view.

MobilePay in Denmark and Finland

MobilePay was launched by Danske Bank in 2013 and merged with Vipps in 2022 to form Vipps MobilePay — but the consumer-facing apps remain separate. In Denmark, MobilePay has ~4 million users (essentially every Danish adult); in Finland, ~2 million. Like Vipps in Norway, it's the default mobile-payment method that Danish and Finnish customers expect to see at the counter.

MobilePay in the Oliver POS browser view

Oliver POS uses the shared Vipps MobilePay for WooCommerce plugin. The cashier picks MobilePay on the Oliver register; Oliver opens the MobilePay hosted approval inside the in-POS browser view; the customer scans the QR code with the MobilePay app or enters their phone; they approve on their device; Oliver writes the WooCommerce order. The flow is essentially identical to Vipps.

MobilePay's point-of-sale modes

The plugin supports both online MobilePay Checkout and the point-of-sale MobilePay flow (QR scan at the counter). Oliver picks up whichever mode the merchant has configured. For Danish indie retail, the QR-at-the-counter flow is the most common, but the online Checkout works equally well in the in-POS browser view for higher-ticket sales.

Best fit for retailers who…

If you sell to Danish or Finnish consumers in a physical store, MobilePay at the Oliver POS is a hard requirement. Pair it with a card-gateway fallback (Nets Easy, Stripe Checkout) for tourists and corporate customers without MobilePay.
